If you’ve ever taken a drive on the Pacific Coast Highway in Long Beach California on a clear day, you can see an island off the coast – that is Catalina Island. This was a popular tourist attraction from the 1920s to the 1950s and beyond.

Not always a tourist attraction for Southern Californians, Catalina was originally settled by Native Americans, later claimed by Spaniards, transferred to Mexico, and then to the United States. The magnate William Wrigley (yup – the bubble gum guy) started developing on Catalina in the 1920s.

The island has been used for smuggling, gold digging, Chicago Cubs training, and in WWII was closed to tourists for military training. Actress Natalie Wood drowned in the water near Two Harbors in 1981. Old Western Movies were filmed there, releasing non-native, American Bison onto the island, whose Bison ancestors still roam. To name a few movies filmed on Catalina are, “Island of Lost Souls” starring Bela Lugosi, “Mutiny on the Bounty” with Clark Gable, and “Terror Island” with Harry Houdini, just to name a few. A lot of history for such a cool little island!
